Simphiwe Sibiya is a Personal Trainer at Virgin Active – must’ve been easy to get there, right? No. Unlike the majority of people who go through Physical IQ to obtain their qualifications, Simphiwe almost missed the opportunity to develop his passion for fitness. It was the PIQ team who identified this passion and reached out.
Simphiwe had a dream of studying through Physical IQ and the opportunity arrived when a special on the Fitness Instructor course, for a limited time only, was announced. However, he missed the deadline and he thought his plans of becoming a fitness professional were thwarted. Then came the inspirational PIQ and Virgin Active staff who saw his potential and believed he was deserving of this opportunity, and so he was awarded one of PIQ’s bursaries.
Simphiwe did not start out the conventional way: matriculate, decide you want to become a personal trainer, go get the qualification and start practising. Simphiwe started out in the Virgin Active changing rooms as a cleaner, and his personality and approach to life humbled those around him. He was consistently committed to his fitness and this exciting world and it became obvious – the fitness community needed someone like him.
“When I wanted to enrol in Physical IQ, I missed the registration date in order to take advantage of their special that I could afford, but they still managed to open a door for me,” Simphiwe explained. To him, Physical IQ was the only option for him in terms of the best platform for him to achieve his goals.
A passion for fitness and people
Whilst fitness is a useful tool for many people’s personal goals and benefits, Simphiwe has other people placed firmly at the front of his mind. “We are living in a world where there are a lot of sicknesses and diseases, and people don’t realise that fitness plays a big role in this. Fitness is more about investing in our health,” Simphiwe elaborated.
Thanks to the Physical IQ bursary, Simphiwe is on his way to achieving all he hoped for as a personal trainer. Whilst fitness and active living has been an integral part of his life since school, Simphiwe now hopes to be able to help other people. When asked about studying further, he said: “I definitely see myself going back to Physical IQ to study further, no matter what it is, as long as it will enable me to help other people afterwards.”
